To add some daylight into my model I wanted to create a hole in the roof, for day light as well as an extra viewing point into my model. To do this I planned the shape I wanted to create on the exterior acrylic sheeting. I used a scalpel to cut this out and scissors to cut through the bricks.

I wanted the whole to look deep so that from the inside you wouldn't see the surface. Around the edges of the hole I glued pieces of styrofoam to bulk out the edges. On top of this I used mod roc to make the foam stick much better as well as create a surface free of gaps.

From this I then used Polyfilla to add extra texture and bulking out to the hole, I think this has worked really effectively to make the hole look like it has dirt and mud on top. Once this was set I then used my acrylic paint to base paint it black, and then add highlights of brown to represent the dirt.

I wanted to include some sort of lighting on the inside of my set, I aimed to create the impression that the people living in the sewers for all that time wired up lights to allow them to see inside the sewer. I pierced small holes through the top of each segment to allow me to poke the head of golden fairy lights through to create a lighting system throughout the model. The image below shows the exterior of the fairy lights.

Here is an image of the lighting on the inside of the tunnel. Adding these lights has really added a new essence of living inside the tunnel, as well as allowing furniture to be more visible.
